I finally finished retouching the images that I shot of Julia two weeks ago. It is my first attempt at creating a fashion spread. I had the help of Jessica Northern, an amazing SF stylist. She and her assistant did a fantastic job of pulling clothes and providing tons of options and ideas! I am looking forward to doing another fashion spread and producing even better work!

I am almost done finalizing my shoot with Julia from two weeks ago! This image is a new approach for me. I usually stay away from compositing and HDR-ing, but this particular scene called for it. Shooting into the late afternoon sun, I couldn't get a decent exposure for both Julia and the sky. I am happy to achieve the look in post.

This past weekend I did a collaborative shoot in SF. It was such a fantastic shoot and I worked with an amazing team! Jessica Northern did the styling. She was so fantastic to work with and really helped me pull the concept together! Her assistant, Heather Herrick, took this photo of me shooting. Nhu Phan did the hair and makeup and our model Julia was from Ford. I have a mountain of photos to edit and will post them up here and on my site when they are finalized. I can't wait to share them with you!

CS5- Content-Aware Fill

Adobe is launching the latest version of Photoshop and the buzz is all about the new content-aware fill. Amazingly, it can completely remove objects from photos in a very seamless manner. Stella Kramer wrote a blog post over on stocklandandmartelblog that offers a very interesting counter argument to all the buzz. I have to say I am in agreement with her.

A while ago, I was flipping through a magazine (I believe it was Nylon) and came across a fashion spread by Chloe Mallet (the top image-girl with bunny years-was part of that spread). I was immediately intrigued by the hazy, dreamy quality of the photo. I continually revisit her work and am always drawn to the quality of light and delicate approach she has to fashion. I can only dream to work with the clients that she has collaborated with! Go check out her work and get lost in its beauty!

The other night I got together with two friends from grammar school, Tracy and April. The three of us knew each other since kindergarten. We were talking about our current job situations and realized that all three of us were working in creative industries. When it came time for Tracy to talk (she works as a zookeeper, how cool is that!!), she said, "I am working my dream job right now, I just need more hours doing it." It was such a gem of wisdom and I realized that I am in the exact situation! I am working my dream job, I just need more (billable) hours doing it! Nothing like old childhood friends to put things back in perspective for you!

Location Scouting

I have a shoot coming up in a few weeks and I have been doing some heavy location scouting. It has been an interesting process so far. Typically for my shoots, I don't do a ton of scouting. Sometimes it works out, but I also find myself not as organized and weeding through a lot of bad photos during the editing process that probably could have been avoided had I scouted. I am really invested in the upcoming shoot and find myself turning a corner with pre-production. I have been taking a lot of photos and most of them have not been so hot and that's okay because this is the time for me to get my bearings before the shoot happens. Its a new process and one that makes me a more grown-up photog. The above photo is one that I took the other day during scouting. I was really able to analyze this one (and other from the same set) and came to the conclusion that I need to consider other locations. I am so happy to have come to this conclusion now and not during the shoot!

Jim Marshall Passes

Sad news in the photo world, Jim Marshall passed away. His photos are legendary and in a league of their own. I have a friend who works in the SF police department and she told me her encounter with Marshall. She said she was working at the station one day when one of her officers came and told her that someone was there to see her. She walked out and there was Jim Marshall. He had a copy of one of his books that he had signed and he gave it to her. He told her it was a token for the help she had given him. Funny thing is, she didn't remember him or helping him! Of course she told me this and showed me the signed book and asked me, "Have you ever heard of this photographer?"

This house is a few blocks away from mine and it is so creepy! But I bet it would be a great place to shoot! I have never seen anyone come in or out of the place and I was shooting through the slats of a six foot high, metal fence. It looks like a haunted house!

I am so excited to participate in sfgirlbybay's blog it forward mashup! We were all given the task of describing what inspires us. First off a big thank you to Sarah over at Cursive Design for introducing me. Sarah's jewelry is so wonderful!

I was a bit overwhelmed when thinking about what inspires me because there are so many different things that spark my creativity, but I decided to narrow it down to three things, books, photography, family.

Reading has always been such a source of joy for me. Even as a little kid it was not uncommon for my parents to find me tucked up in a corner of the house reading. Luckily my parents were both avid readers and encouraged me to read, read, read! My dad gave me a copy of Steinbeck's East of Eden. It has remained a long standing favorite of mine. I love stories and draw tons of inspiration from books.

And here are a few other books I love...

Photography is my passion and I am constantly inspired to take better photos. I fell in love with it when I first picked up Annie Leibovitz's "Photographs." Her work opened up my eyes to how photography could convey emotion. Here are a few other photographers who's work has changed the way I view photography.

And of course... Annie.

Finally, my greatest source of inspiration comes from family!! Where would I be without the love and support of my parents, two brothers, and sister?? My parents have never balked at my desire to be an artist. They have done the opposite in fact, encouraged me at every step of the way. And of course my siblings offer me the laughter I need when things seem bleak. Inspiration comes to me in all sorts of way, but it is my family that reminds me of the most important thing in life-- love!

Phew! This is by far the longest blog entry for me!

I am happy to introduce up next Dashily! I have a soft spot for photo blogs and I don't think you will be disappointed by this one! Isn't this photo wonderful?!

A few weeks ago, I started a new job. One of the perks of the job has been learning more about fashion and styling. Her work makes me want to pack up my bags and go travel the world, yet is also a reminder that some of the most amazing photos are simple and elegant. I used to work for photographer Jim Erickson and one of the most valuable pieces of advice he gave me was the photos are everywhere. Flora's work echos this thought. Go visit her site and be amazed!

I have been doing a lot of cleaning/organizing today. I have come across several images that I had completely forgotten about. This is one I took earlier this year. I was shooting like crazy with my Hasselblad (this image is cropped) but decided to put it down when I realized that it was time to learn digital. I enjoy shooting digital, but there is a certain feel in my Hassy images that I have yet to translate to digital. I love the tones in this image and the mood. Maybe its time to revisit the Hassy.

I have been very busy this week assisting a local photographer on a job that has lasted several days. I am very thankful to have this opportunity to do some hands on learning. The first assistant gave me some very straightforward, blunt advice regarding assisting: "First lesson of assisting: Don't mess up." Pretty basic advice that I can appreciate and follow!

My first trip out to New York was incredible!! I had five meetings this week. I received tons of positive feedback regarding my work and great suggestions as to how it can be improved. I am so grateful to the photo editors who took the time out of their busy schedules to meet with me. Meeting with them gave me so many ideas for future shoots.

As for New York itself, I am completely enamored. What an incredibly vibrant city! I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge Wednesday morning and just felt so inspired and invigorated by the site of Manhattan.

I hope to be back out there soon!

This quote speaks volumes to how I feel about my work. I have the urge to push it further, make more meaningful images. I am happy how far I have come with my photography, but I still think my best work is yet to come. So stay tuned and continue to visit my site to see what I am working on!

I have a major photo crush on Wendy Bevan. Her work is so lovely and haunting. Her "About" section sums her work up beautifully: "Her rich and painterly Polaroid's draw us into a world of ambiguity and uneasy narratives. Perusing her portfolio one is led through a labyrinth of old film sets in which silent performances are taking places." Such a beautiful summation to her work!
